How to Measure Yourself for Clothes: Bust, Waist, Hips and Inseam

How to take your own body measurements for online shopping: chest or bust, waist, hips, inseam, neck and sleeve, plus how to use a brand's size chart.

Quick answer

Use a soft tape measure, wear light clothing and stand relaxed. Measure the bust or chest at the fullest point, the natural waist at the narrowest point above the belly button, the hips at the fullest point, and the inseam from the crotch to the ankle. Keep the tape level and snug but not tight, then compare with each brand's own size chart, since sizes vary between brands.

Taking your measurements once makes online shopping far more reliable. You need a soft tape measure and five minutes.

Before you start

  • Wear light, fitted clothing or underwear.
  • Stand relaxed with feet together.
  • Keep the tape level and snug but not tight.
  • Ask someone to help for back and inseam measurements if you can.

Key measurements

Measurement How
Bust / chest Around the fullest part of the bust or chest, under the arms
Underbust Directly under the bust (for bras)
Natural waist Narrowest part of the torso, above the belly button
Hips Fullest part of the hips and seat
Inseam Crotch to ankle along the inside leg
Neck Around the base of the neck (shirts)
Sleeve Center back of neck, over the shoulder, to the wrist
Shoulder From shoulder point to shoulder point across the back

Using size charts

  • Use the brand’s own chart: sizing varies a lot between brands and countries.
  • Check whether the chart lists body measurements or garment measurements.
  • Garment measurements include ease; compare them with a piece you own that fits.

Between sizes?

  • Stretch fabrics: size down for a closer fit.
  • Woven, structured fabrics: size up and tailor if needed.
  • Read the fit notes (slim, regular, relaxed) and reviews about sizing.

Save your numbers

Keep your measurements in your phone notes, and re-measure every year or after body changes.

Common questions

Where is my natural waist?

The narrowest part of your torso, usually a little above the belly button. Bend to one side: the crease that forms is your natural waist.

What if I'm between sizes?

Check the fabric and fit notes. Size up for structured, non-stretch pieces or a relaxed fit, and size down for stretchy fabrics or a closer fit.

How do I measure inseam?

Measure from the crotch seam down the inside of the leg to where you want the hem, or measure the inseam of pants that fit you well.
